Mosquito AAA Rebels (Tier I)
With 10 returning players from their
2004 Mosquito "A"
Provincial Championship team, the Victoria Rebels are poised to make some noise
in their attempt at a 2005 Mosquito AAA title. Managed again by Chris
Stewart, the Rebels have survived the loss of fireballer Jesse Hodges to Pee Wee
by adding hard throwing and hard hitting Ryan Rufh who came over to Gordon Head
Minor Baseball from Triangle Little League. With the addition of Rufh and
the development of other returning players during the course of spring ball, the
Rebels pitching depth will be hard to match, as Stewart notes "I have 9 players
that I can confidently rely on to take the mound in any given situation."

July 24, 2005 - Victoria Rebels Mosquitos Head
to Provincials as 2005 Island Champions
The Victoria Rebels Mosquito AAA Tier I Baseball Club completed a 3 game sweep
of the Duncan Blue Jays to claim the 2005 BCMBA Mosquito AAA Tier I Island
Championship and will head to the Tier I Mosquito AAA Provincial Championships
at North Delta beginning Friday, July 29th. Led by a talented pitching staff, a
tough defence and a potent offence, the Rebels won Games 1 and 2 of the series
by 10-3 and 10-2 scores. In Game 3, Duncan came out swinging, holding leads of
3-0 after 1 and 7-5 after 4 until the Rebels scored 2 in the top of the 5th and
3 in the top of the 6th to secure a 10-7 victory and the sweep. The 3 wins over
Duncan gives the 2005 Rebels a 12-4 record overall.
July 31, 2005 - Mosquito AAA
Rebels Capture 4th Place at Tier I Mosquito Provincials
The Victoria Rebels Mosquito AAA
Baseball Club has returned from North Delta with a 4th place finish in the
Mosquito AAA Tier I Provincial Championships. In a tough, 5 team grouping that
also included Abbotsford, Ladner, Richmond and Ridge Meadows, the Rebels started
things off on the right foot with a first game 6-2 victory over Ridge Meadows.
Victoria's Morgan Miles pitched a stellar first 2 innings, went 2 for 3 and made
some great defensive plays at second base to earn game MVP honors. In a Game 2
rematch of last year's Mosquito "A" championship final, the Abbotsford Angels
exacted their revenge and scored 3 runs in the first inning and then held on to
escape with a 4-2 win. Ryan Rufh was Victoria's MVP, going 2 for 3 at the plate
and pitching a solid 6th inning, striking out 2. In a Game 3 "must win"
situation, the Rebels battled a tough Ladner squad to a 2-2 tie heading into the
bottom of the 5th inning, when Ladner squeaked a pair across to take a 4-2 lead
which the Rebels could not overcome in the top of the 6th. For Victoria, Jake
Duvall was named game MVP for 2 innings of scoreless pitching and some great
work at catcher. In Game 4, the Richmond Red Sox came out swinging in the top of
the first and pounded out 4 runs on seven solid hits before the game was 15
minutes old and then cruised to a 7-2 victory. Side Notes: The Rebels were
without the services of one of their top pitchers, Matt Cave, for most of the
tournament. Cave broke a finger on his pitching hand during the zone tournament
in Duncan the week before and was not healed enough to play the first three
games. He was inserted into the lineup for the last game against Richmond, and
for his great attitude and sportsmanship and support of his fellow teammates
over the course of the tournament, was awarded the game MVP. Victoria's Ryan
Rufh was the Mosquito AAA Home Run Derby champion in the skills competition.
Competing against 14 other players from both Tier I and Tier II teams, Rufh
needed 5 rounds and some monster blasts over the fence to finally secure the
victory and win a new double-barrel Pee Wee bat. With the win and three losses,
the Rebels finished the season with a 13-7 record. Over the past 2 years the
Rebels have compiled a 31-11 record, have earned 1st and 4th at the Provincial
Championships and have won the 2005 Mosquito AAA Tier I Island Championship.
Look out Pee Wee, here they come! Way to go you Rebels!
Mosquito AAA Bandits (Tier II)
With
not quite enough 9 year olds to field a full "A" team for 2005, the Bandits
were Victoria's first foray into the new Tier II structure that was established by
BC Minor for the Mosquito level. Managed by Keith Davidoff and assisted by
Stewart Guy, the Bandits consisted primarily of first year players who excelled
during House league play. To see the 2005 Bandits click on the photo at the left
for a full size version. Players include (kneeling L to R) Kyle Murai,
Everett Fisher, Drew Davidoff, Derek Jew, Mark Baroff, (standing L to R) Jeff
Draper, Isaac Halsal, Evan Guy, Chris Fougner, Keiler Totz, Cooper Ravetch and
Robbie Rhynas. The Bandits battled for the Tier II Island Championship in
Duncan over the July 22-24th weekend and despite three very close and well
played games with Duncan and Oceanside, were eliminated from further contention.
Congratulations are in order however for a great season of All-Star ball!

Cougars Breeze Through Island Zones to Secure
a Spot at the Provincials
The Victoria Cougars Pee Wee A Baseball Club dominated the Island Zones
at Carnarvon Park over the July 22-24 weekend with a perfect 6-0 record,
including a scrappy 9-7 victory over a tough Ladysmith squad, who finished
second and will be joining the Cougars at the Pee Wee A Provincials in
Chilliwack over the August long weekend. Aside from the close game against
Ladysmith, the Cougars won all their games by handy margins thanks to solid
pitching and a potent offensive attack.
July 31, 2005 - Cougars Place
Third at Pee Wee A Provincials
The Victoria Pee Wee A Cougars had a
successful showing at the 2005 Provincials going 4-0 in the round robin portion
of the tournament before losing to Ladysmith in the semi-finals and finishing in
third place. The Cougars opened the tournament with a 16-2 thumping of
North Delta. This was followed by a 13-12 squeaker over Ridge Meadows and
a 12-11 nail-biter over Ladner. The Cougars then closed the round robin
with another big win, this time a 14-0 win over host Chilliwack. In the
semi-final, the Cougars met up with their hard hitting Island rivals from
Ladysmith who came out swinging and defeated the Cougars easily 15-4.
Side Notes: In the skills competition Matt Bridge came in third in
the home run portion. The team of Eric Miska (at home), Brandon McLeod (at
first), Brock Davidoff (at second), Ryan Adkins (at shortstop), and Matt Renko
(at third) came in first in the around the horn competition.
Pee Wee A Hawks
The
Hawks team were an assembly of players from Carnarvon Park Baseball Association.
Manager Jim Verster and Coach Mike Gavas found these boys and their parents so
eager to keep playing ball after the regular season that they decided to push
for a second Pee Wee "A" team and it all came together for the Vancouver Island
Zones. To see the 2005 Hawks click on the photo at the left for a full size
version. The players and coaches include: starting in the back row are
Coach Jim Verster, Michael Horton, Sam Wright and Coach Mike Gavas. In the
middle row are Brandon Parmar, Thomas Hoyer-Wood, Thomas Nicholson, Luke Elliot
and Eric Beban. The bottom row players are Brandon Rossum, Aidan Verster, Piers
Zdan, Nick Gavas and Stefan deMontmorency. Exhibition season highlights include
a split of a double-header in Port Alberni and a win over the Victoria Mustangs
Pee Wee AA team at Carnarvon Park.
Hawks Reach Semi-Finals of Island Zones
Before Bowing Out to Tough Ladysmith Squad
With a 3-2 record, the Pee Wee A Hawks reached the semi-finals of the Island
Zones before bowing out to a tough, hard-hitting Ladysmith club. Wins in
the Round Robin portion of the tournament came against Duncan (15-2), Port
Alberni (9-4) and Campbell River (16-1), with losses coming to the Victoria
Cougars (13-4) and to Ladysmith.
Pee Wee AA Mustangs
The
Pee Wee AA Mustangs began their season with the Diane Cook Memorial All-Star
Tournament in Surrey on the July long weekend and faced some tough opponents
Richmond, Ridge Meadows and Aldergrove. With just three practices under their
belt, the 'Stangs battled well, but just not enough to come out with a win.
Jacob Livant, Rob Chittick and Jesse Hodges each picked up game MVP medallions
during the tournament. Defensive play of the weekend went to Shane Gallager for
a superb sliding/diving catch along the left field line. Best offensive play of
the weekend went to Jacob Livant for a 2 run crush over the left field fence.
In exhibition play, the Mustangs finished with a 6-3 record with wins over
Duncan (2), Comox (2), Oceanside and the single A Victoria Cougars. Losses
came against Duncan (2) and the single A Victoria Hawks. At the Island
Zones in Duncan over the July 28-30 weekend, the Mustangs finished with a 2-2
record in the round robin, with victories over Campbell River and Comox (an
18-12 slugfest!). This was good enough for a 4th place finish and a trip
to the semi-finals against Comox, who shut the Mustangs down 4-1 on some solid
pitching. The Mustangs will finish their season with the Tournament of
Champions tournament in Kamloops over the August 18-21st weekend. To

decisive wins, an 11-1 thumping of Abbotsford and a 15-4 victory over North
