Allenby Rebels Snatch 5-4 Victory Away From Evening Optimists in Extra
Inning Thriller!
The underdog Gordon Head Evening Optimists took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of
the 5th inning only to see the heavily favoured Allenby Rebels scratch out
2 runs in each of the bottom of the 5th and 6th and then the game winner in the
bottom of the 7th to cap off the dramatic comeback and complete an absolutely
sensational game at Allenby Park. Through the first 4 innings, the Rebel bats
were silenced by a superb Optimists defence that rallied behind pitchers Kyle
Murai and Daniel Bednarski and recorded 7 tough infield ground outs (including 4
great plays by shortstop Will Aesoph) and one long flyball out. The only hit for
the Rebels came from Ryan Kennedy with a leadoff single in the 2nd. Meanwhile
the Optimists managed to score a pair of runs in each of the 1st and 2nd innings
off Rebel starter Max Headly, with Everett Fisher getting a big 2 RBI single in
the bottom of the second. The damage could have been worse as the Optimists left
the bases loaded in the first and left 2 on in the second, thanks to some heads
up Rebel defensive plays and some tough pitching by Headley to get himself out
of trouble. Solid pitching by the Rebels reliable Ryan Kennedy in the 3rd and
4th innings and by Jake Duvall in the 5th inning (0 runs, 0 hits, 3 walks and 8
strikeouts) silenced the Optimist bats and set the stage for the comeback to
begin. With Optimist closer Brendan Miller on the mound, leadoff batter Jeff
Draper reached on an error. This was followed by singles by Quinn Bachand and
Noah Boulton and then walks to Aske Foyd and Adam Marsh and suddenly the Rebels
had scored 2 runs with nobody out. However Miller then buckled down and struck
out the next
three batters to take a 4-2 lead into the 6th. In the top of the
6th, Kyle Murai drew a leadoff walk and then was moved to second on a nice
sacrifice bunt by Anand Chonkrida. Another walk to Will Aesoph and the Optimists
had runners on first and second and were threatening to add an insurance run.
This time it was Duvall’s turn to buckle down and he struck out the next 2
batters to close out the inning and head to the bottom of the sixth. In the
bottom of the sixth, Max Headley lined a little looping liner to third that was
caught on a great grab by Optimist third baseman Scott Fradette for the first
out. Duvall followed with what appeared to be a line drive out into the glove of
second baseman Kyle Murai but the ball had just enough spin on it to pop out
onto the ground and Duvall had reached. Miller then struck out slugger Ryan
Kennedy for the second out and the Optimists were one out away from the
Championship. Jeff Draper came to the plate and stroked a double that scored
Duvall and the Rebels were within one. Miller then hit the next batter and the
Rebels had runners at first and second. Noah Boulton then stroked a hard ground
ball to short that was knocked down by, but just eluded the grasp of, shortstop
Will Aesoph, and Draper came around to score the tying run sliding under the
throw to home plate. Once all the excitement died down, Miller then struck out
the next batter to send the game into extra innings. For the Rebels, lefty
Kieran Russell came in to pitch and did a great job in striking out 2 and then
getting some help from his catcher who threw out the Optimists Bednarski at
second as he was trying to steal after drawing a walk. The Optimists also
countered with a lefty, Everett Fisher, who issued a leadoff walk to Adam Marsh.
Jaden Gerwin then flew out to centrefield for the first out. Alex Curtis then
launched a 1-0 pitch into the gap in centre field that eluded the Optimist
outfielders and went to the fence. Despite a great effort to get the throw to
home plate, it was too late as Marsh scampered around the bases and slid into
home easily for the winning run, while the rest of the Rebels bounded out of
their dugout to begin the wild celebration. All in all, a great game to end what
was a great season of Mosquito baseball! Congratulations to both the Rebels and
the Optimists (with their silver medals in the photo above) for such a great game!
