Mosquito A Rebels
A
strong group of 9 year-olds see the Victoria Rebels poised to take a run at
capturing Victoria's second Mosquito "A'" Provincial Championship in the last 3
years. The Rebels are already off and running and have recently captured
the Mosquito "A" Championship at the Valley of Champions Tournament in Kelowna
on the July 15-16 weekend. Managed by Clay Russell and assisted by Don
Bryan and Lindsay Funk, the Rebels include Brandon Ashford, Michael Baart,
Mitchell Bryan, Dane Collins, Zach Downey, Andrew Funk, Alex Hendra-Brown, Will
Hewitt, Mathew Rosko, Kieran Russell, Cassy Van der Mey and Riley Williamson. The
Rebels will host the Mosquito A Island Championships at Allenby Park on the July
28-30 weekend.
July 18, 2006 - Rebels Capture
Mosquito A Title at Valley of Champions Tournament
The Victoria Rebels breezed to a 4-0 record and defeated Ladner in the final
to win the Mosquito A title at the Valley of Champions Tournament in Kelowna on
the July 14-16 weekend.
July 31, 2006 -
Rebels Dominate Island Zones to Sweep Mosquito A Island Championship
The Victoria Rebels pounded their way to a
perfect record to capture the 2006 Mosquito A Island Championship in Victoria
over the July 28-30 weekend. The Rebels were nothing short of perfect in their
games, winning each game by the mercy rule. In the semi-final game Victoria
hammered Port Alberni 15-1 and in the Championship game it was Victoria over
Ladysmith 16-1. The Rebels are now off to the Provincials in Port Alberni on the
August long weekend.
August 7, 2006 - Rebels
Grab Silver Medal at Mosquito A Provincials
The Victoria Rebels went undefeated in round robin play (3-0-1) and then
thumped Ladysmith 16-4 in the semi-finals, only to suffer their first defeat of
the tournament to Cloverdale in the Championship game, thus taking the silver
medal at the 2006 Mosquito A Championships in Port Alberni on the August long
weekend. The Rebels started off tough in the round robin with a 9-9 tie
against Cloverdale, then went on to easy wins over Rutland (11-2), Ridge Meadows
(10-0) and Vancouver (15-2). In the rematch against Cloverdale in the
final, the Rebels got off to a tough start getting down 4-0 after the first
inning and could not generate any offense against some tough Cloverdale
pitching. The kids still held heads
high with 2nd place and overall it was a great experience for players, parents
and coaches. Players and coaches are already talking about strategy for next
year's AAA team!
Mosquito AAA Venom (Tier
I)
Managed by Danny Martin and assisted by Keith Davidoff and Rocky
Horne the Venom are poised to take a run at Victoria's first ever Tier 1
Mosquito title. Comprised of some of our very top 9-10 year old players,
the Venom include: Josh Adkins, Jordan Cooper, Drew Davidoff, Brandon Feldman,
Chris Fougner, Aron Funk, Evan Guy, Kurtis Horne, Ryan Kennedy, Vinny Martin,
Daniel Massy and Kyle Murai. The Venom, along with Duncan, will be the
Island representatives at the Mosquito AAA Tier 1 Provincial Championships which
will be held in Newton over the August long weekend.
August 7, 2006 - Venom
Success Results in Silver Medal at Mosquito AAA Tier 1 Provincials
The Victoria Venom Mosquito AAA Tier 1 team capped off a successful season
by taking the silver medal at the 2006 Mosquito AAA Tier 1 Provincials in Newton
on the August long weekend. The Venom finished second in their pool with a
3-1 record. Wins in round robin play came over Coquitlam-Moody (8-3), West
Richmond (13-0), Newton (4-3), while their loss came to Abbostsford (4-1) in a
game that decided first in the pool. In the semi-finals, the Venom squeaked out
a nail-biting 3-2 win over previously undefeated Ladner to face Cloverdale (who
also knocked off previously unbeaten Abbotsford in the semis). This game was a
classic pitching duel and Cloverdale prevailed 2-1 to take the gold.
Mosquito AAA Bandits (Tier II)
Once
again Victoria will be represented at the Tier II Mosquito level, as a great
turn-out for assessments meant that 3 teams could be formed at the Mosquito
level. Managed by Chris Stewart and assisted by Ken McLeod and Murray
Smith, the Bandits are a mix of 9 and 10 year old players and include Mark
Baroff, Chris Bjola, Jon Bond, James Drew, Everett Fisher, Jacob Kamakawaji,
Chris Machek, Jordan Parmar, Patrick Reed, Evan Smith, Glen Smith and Jason
Stewart.
July 10, 2006 -
Bandits Take 3rd at Cal Ripken Provincial Invitational Tournament in Nanaimo
The Victoria Bandits enjoyed some early
season success by playing well against some very strong 10 and 11 year old Cal
Ripken teams and being awarded 3rd place at the Cal Ripken Provincial
Championship Invitational Tournament held in Nanaimo July 7-9th. A big win
for the Bandits over Oceanside AA put the Bandits into the semi-finals, where
they held a 4-0 lead, but eventually lost to the Nanaimo Pirates 8-5.
July 31, 2006 -
Bandits Capture Silver at Island Championships - Advance to Provincials
The Victoria Bandits are off to the Mosquito
Tier 2 Provincial Championships in North Delta after defeating Comox 13-3 on
Sunday morning to secure 2nd place in the Vancouver Island Tier 2 Championships
held in Courtenay on the July 28-30 weekend. The mercy-rule thumping of Comox
came on the heels of a tough 8-2 loss to Campbell River the night before in a
game that decided the Tier 2 Island Champions. The Bandits finished 3-2 at the
tournament with other wins over Comox 8-1 and 10-2. Their other loss was also
against Campbell River in a 6-5 thriller that was decided on a controversial
call at the plate with 2 outs in the bottom of the 6th inning. On the
mound for the Bandits, Everett Fisher was superb, pitching 5 innings over the
tournament , allowing no runs and just 2 hits. Jon Bond was also excellent,
allowing just 2 runs and 2 hits in his 5 innings of work. At the plate for
the Bandits, Jason Stewart (.625, 5 for 8, 6 walks) led the way, followed by
Jordan Parmar (.555, 5 for 9, 3 walks, 4 runs). Patrick Reed also had 5 hits
(including a triple) and scored 7 runs to lead the Bandits offence in that
category.
August 7, 2006 -
Bandits Struggle at Provincials But Enjoy the Experience
The Victoria Bandits struggled to find their
offence and came away with an 0-4 record at the 2006 Mosquito Tier 2 Provincials
in North Delta over the August long weekend. Playing in a tough pool that
included the eventual champion (Kelowna) and the silver medalist (Chilliwack),
the Bandits began round robin play against North Delta, and despite limiting
them to just 2 hits, gave up some crucial walks and lost 5-0. The Bandits
then met up with powerful Kelowna and lost 13-3 in six full innings. In
game 3 against Ridge Meadows, the Bandits overcame some early errors to battle
back against Ridge Meadows and ended the game with the tying and winning runs on
third and second, in a heart-breaking 10-9 loss. Finally, the Bandits
ended their season with a 12- 4 loss to Chilliwack. Despite their record,
the Bandits enjoyed playing at the Provincial tournament, the first such
experience for all the players. Leading hitters in the tournament for the
Bandits were Jason Stewart (.500, 5 for 10, 4 RBIs), Jon Bond (.444, 4 for 9,
two doubles) and Patrick Reed (.363, 4 for 11). On the mound, Chris Bjola
led the way, allowing 4 runs in 5 innings pitched, striking out 8 and holding
opponents to a .200 batting average. James Drew pitched 4 innings, allowing just
2 runs and no hits and Mark Baroff pitched 4 innings, allowing 4 runs on 2 hits
and 4 strikeouts. Game MVPs for the Bandits went to Mark Baroff, Jon Bond,
Chris Bjola and Jacob Kamakawaji. Evan Smith won the catcher's throwing
accuracy competition at the opening ceremonies.

Second at Island Championship - Advance to Provincials
The Victoria Cougars finished second at the
Pee Wee A Vancouver Island Champions after losing a tough one to the Victoria
Tigers in the championship game in Campbell River over the July 28-30 weekend.
With their second place finish however, the Cougars capture the second Island
berth that was available and will head to Kelowna along with the Tigers to take
a run at the Pee Wee A Provincials.
August 7, 2006 - Cougars Capture Third Place at Provincials, Bow Out in
Semi-Finals
The Victoria Cougars Pee Wee A squad swept through their round robin with a
4-0 record before losing to Kelowna in the semi-finals at the Pee Wee A
Provincial Championships in Kelowna on the August long weekend, thereby
capturing 3rd place in the tournament. The
Cougars wins in the tournament came over West Richmond (14-5), Ridge Meadows
(10-3), Vancouver (9-8) and Rutland (20-2). The semi-final was a close one that
ended 6-4 in favour of Kelowna.
Pee Wee A Tigers

good luck) the Tigers are shown at left with their Island Championship trophy

July 31, 2006 - Tigers Capture
Island Championship by Defeating Fellow Victorians
The Victoria Tigers are the Pee Wee A
Vancouver Island Champions after defeating the Victoria Cougars in the
championship game in Campbell River over the July 28-30 weekend. The Tigers
finished the round robin with a 3-1 record. In the single game final the Tigers
beat the Cougars 6-4. Ryan Rufh pitched six innings, striking out 10 batters and
only allowing 2 runs. Nick Gavas had an excellent game at shortstop and Matt
Bryan hit a 3 run home run in the fourth inning to put the Tigers ahead by
three. The Tigers now advance to the Provincials in Kelowna August 3-7.
August 7, 2006 - Tigers finish 2-2 at
Provincials in Kelowna
The Victoria Tigers had a good run at the
Provincials, finishing 2-2 in a strong pool that contained the eventual BC
Champions, the Richmond Red Sox, and the runners-up, the Kelowna Cubs.
Unfortunately, star pitcher Ryan Rufh was unable to join the team until the
final game of the round robin. Wins came over the Ridge Meadow Royals (7-2)
and the Abbotsford Angels (9-3). Losses came at the hands of the Red Sox
(12-3) and the Cubs (9-8). The Tigers finished with the same record as Kelowna
in the A Pool, but had lost the 9-8 heart-breaker to them in the first round
- a controversial and emotional game that went to an extra inning - and
therefore failed to advance to the semi-finals.

August 15, 2006 - Victoria Bears Take Silver
at Bantam AAA Tier 2 Provincial Championships
The 2006 Victoria Bears played 58 games
this season and finished the year with 32 wins, 22 losses and 4 ties. After a
Spring League season of competition in the Lower Island AA League, the Bears
embarked on a Summer exhibition schedule that saw them travel to Washington
State three times in July before heading to Kelowna for the Bantam AAA Tier 2
Provincial Championships. Playing their best baseball of the season, the Bears
rolled into the Provincials ready to face some formidable Bantam AAA opponents.
Their first game, a loss to the host Rutland Rockies, was a close, well played
game that had Rutland score three times in the 7th inning to win 8-5. Reese
Pribilsky pitched a solid four innings and Jeremy Campbell provided some scoring
punch. The Bears second game of the tournament had them face a tough Richmond
squad. Some late inning heroics had the Bears send 12 batters to the plate in
the 7th inning giving them 7 runs and a come from behind 8-6 win. That win put
the Bears into the semi final where they faced the Cardinals of Port Coquitlam.
In what was probably the Bear's best game of the season, they took PoCo by
storm. Led by all-star performances from several players including Reese
Priblisky's complete game, Ben Shong's homerun, 2 doubles and a single, and Greg
Thibadeau's momentum changing spectacular catch in left field, the Bears downed
the team from PoCo 11-6. The Provincial Championship game was a tight affair
with the Bears out hitting Ladner 8-6, but little of it was timely and the Bears
left 7 runners stranded including bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh.
Scott Jones hit a single and a double but a stingy Ladner defense only allowed
one run as the team from the Lower Mainland went on to a 4-1 victory. With the
winning run at the plate, Jamie Barbour flied out to deep left field, only feet
away from some last inning heroics.

Provincial Championship!
The Victoria Capitals defeated the Chilliwack Cougars 10-0 to capture the
2006 B.C. Midget AAA Provincial Championships in Kamloops on the August long
weekend. The Capitals bounced back from a shocking 8-0 defeat at the hands of
the seventh-ranked Cougars in the tournament opener to win four straight must

loss, winning round-robin games by scores of 11-1 over Ridge Meadows and 12-2
over Vancouver to make it to the tournament playoffs. The Capitals then beat
Newton 12-6 to get into the final game against Chilliwack. Shea Young finished
the semi-final game and pitched a masterful one-hitter against Chilliwack for
the win. Jamie Benn led the Capitals offence throughout the tournament, keyed by
