July 2, 2006 - Venom Send
Early Season Message by Capturing Jack Short Tournament
The Victoria Venom Mosquito AAA
Tier 1 team knocked off 3-time defending tournament champion
Ladner Red Sox 7-0 in the final of the Jack Short
Invitational on Sunday afternoon in Maple Ridge. The Venom started exhibition
play with a doubleheader on Friday June 29, beating host Ridge Meadows 9-2 and
followed this up with a 5-4 victory over Abbotsford on Friday evening. On
Saturday June 30 the Venom thumped
Chilliwack
11-1 in their first game. Saturday evening’s game was a thrilling 12-11 come
from behind win over a tough Coquitlam-Moody team.
Teams traded runs all night right up to the final
inning. Brandon Lawe’s towering home run in the
bottom of the 6th started the late Venom rally, which saw the Venom execute
several key plays to pull out the victory. In Sunday’s semifinal, the Venom beat
rival Cloverdale 7-6 in another clutch come from behind performance. In the
championship final against Ladner the Venom got out
to an early lead and never looked back, capturing the tournament title and
finishing with a perfect 6-0 record.
July 15, 2007 - Venom Repeat
as Winners at Kelowna's Valley of Champions Mosquito AAA Tournament.
The Victoria Venom captured gold on Sunday afternoon in Kelowna, overpowering
the Abbotsford Angels 8-2 in the final of the 2007 Valley of Champions
tournament. The Venom got out to a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and never
looked back, thanks to some hot bats, heads-up baserunning, and stingy defense.
The Venom started the tournament off with a 15-4 win over Kelowna, and then lost
a close one to Abbotsford 8-6. In the final round robin game against Ridge
Meadows the Venom showed their true colors, coming back from a one run deficit
in the bottom of the 6th to win 11-10. With 2 out and bases loaded, Brandon
Ashford stepped to the plate and smashed a triple, scoring 2 RBI's and securing
the Venom a spot in the semi-final game. The Venom then rolled-over Pool A
winner Ladner 7-2, and closed out the tournament with a 4-1 record by defeating
Abbotsford in the championship final.
July 30, 2007 - Victoria Venom
Champions at Mosquito AAA Island Invitational Tournament
The Victoria Venom 10 year-old all star team
breezed to a perfect 4-0 record during the Mosquito AAA Island Invitational held
July 28 and 29, 2007 at Gordon Head and Sidney’s Rotary Parks. In its first
match-up, the Venom took on the Duncan Red Sox and glided to a convincing 8-4
win. The second game of Saturday’s doubleheader saw the Venom thump Comox 17-7.
In Sunday’s first of two back to back games, the Venom took on the Victoria
Raiders and rolled to a 12-1 win, with 5 Venom pitchers combining for a
no-hitter. In the final game of the invitational, the Venom bite once again
proved too much to handle, as the boys beat the Victoria Bandits by a score of
12-6. The Venom organization is now busy practicing and preparing to host the
AAA Tier 1 provincials in Sidney over the August long weekend.
Mosquito AAA Bandits (Tier I)
The
Victoria Bandits, made up of nine players from Allenby and four from Triangle,
have been working hard to prepare for the B.C. Mosquito AAA Tier 1 provincial
tournament over the August long weekend in Sidney. Based out of Allenby and
coached by Dale Sleightholme, Grant Fenton and Jeff Rud,
the team includes (front row, left to right) Kyle Aylett, Thomas House, Andrew
Belleville, James McNab, Tyrus Sleightholme, Jordan Garner and Bryce Fenton;
(Middle row, left to right) Sammy Stevenson, Oliver Spratt, Dakota St. Laurent,
Will Hewitt, Matt Rud and Alex Hendra-Brown and (Back row, left to right)
Coaches Dale Sleightholme, Grant Fenton and Jeff Rud.
July 22, 2007 - Team Activities to Date
The Bandits have played an ambitious
exhibition schedule, competing the Kelowna Valley of Champions Tournament in
mid-July as well as the Bob Bunnett Cup in North Delta July 20-22. Game MVPs for
the Bandits in those events included Alex Hendra-Brown, Jordan Garner, Sammy
Stevenson, Dakota St. Laurent, James McNab, Will Hewitt and Tyrus Sleightholme.
The Bandits have also played a series of exhibition games against Vancouver
Island teams including Duncan, Nanaimo and Victoria squads. Emerging as solid
pitching regulars have been Matt Rud, Alex Hendra-Brown and Dakota St. Laurent.
Leading the way consistently at the plate have been James McNab, Will Hewitt,
Sammy Stevenson, Andrew Belleville and Matt Rud. Having accepted the challenge
to move up to Tier 1 competition this season, the boys have been exposed to
top-flight competition and have improved a great deal over a very busy past few
weeks. The Bandits' goals include improving as ballplayers, getting the best
baseball experience possible, having fun and peaking as a team in time for
provincials.
July 29, 2007 - Bandits Prepare for Provincials With Good Showing at Island
Challenge Tournament
As a final tuneup for the provincial tournament, the Bandits went 2-2 during
the July 28-29 weekend competing in an Island Challenge tournament. The Bandits
fell 16-15 to the Victoria Raiders in their opening game of the tournament,
despite a dramatic six-run rally in the sixth inning keyed by a sterling
bunt-triple by Jordan Garner which was almost enough to cap a comeback. The team
then dominated Comox in its second game, leaving it with a 1-1 record after the
opening day. The win over Comox included a towering shot to centrefield by
pitcher and outfielder Thomas House. Game 3 on Sunday morning was a terrific
one, with the Bandits battling back from an 8-6 deficit in the fifth inning to
win 10-8. Tyrus Sleightholme delivered a clutch RBI single in the sixth to lift
the Bandits while pitcher Will Hewitt shut the door in the bottom of the final
inning with some strong fielding help from his teammates. Right fielder Sammy
Stevenson made the catch of the year, a dramatic diving grab that thwarted a
Duncan threat and fielder Kyle Aylett contributed some solid RBIs. In the final
game of the round-robin tournament, the Bandits faced the Victoria Venom for the
first time this year. The Bandits played strongly throughout the game, taking a
5-2 lead after three innings. But the Venom battled back, padding a 7-5 lead
with five more runs in the sixth. Despite an eventual 12-6 loss, the Bandits
played a strong game and served notice they will be tough competition at the
August long weekend's B.C. Tier 1 tournament in Sidney. Standouts in this game
included pitcher Dakota St. Laurent, who struck out three straight batters in
the fifth, starter Alex Hendra Brown who held the powerful Venom to just two
runs in the first three innings and a host of Bandit batters who showed their
mettle at the plate.
August 5, 2007 -
Bandits Battle at Mosquito AAA Provincial
Tournament
The Bandits turned in a solid showing at the B.C. AAA Tier 1 Mosquito
Championships over the August long weekend in Sidney. The team's first three
games were each hard-fought and decided by a total of three runs as Victoria
lost 10-8 to Coquitlam-Port Moody (after leading 8-3 at the mid-way point), tied
Kelowna 9-9 and then dropped a 9-8 squeaker to North Delta. The Bandits showed
their resiliency in the tie against Kelowna, roaring back from a 6-0 deficit and
very nearly winning the game in the bottom of the sixth. The team also scored
five runs in the sixth against North Delta and threatened to tie the game with a
runner on third. After those three nail-biters, the Bandits fell 12-3 to
powerful eventual B.C. champion Ridge Meadows in the Victoria team's final game
of the tournament. Although their efforts weren't rewarded in the win column,
the Bandits' improvement on the field was evident. Chosen game MVPs for the
Bandits during the B.C. tournament were Bryce Fenton, Matt Rud, Thomas House and
Kyle Aylett.

fellow Pee Wee A Victoria Cougars 7-5 in 10 innings in what was a dramatic Pee
Wee A Provincial Championship game in Mission. Sparked by tournament MVP Mitch
Seivewright, the Tiger bats came through when needed, scoring 2 runs in the top
of the 10th and then shutting the Cougars out in the bottom of the inning. This
followed a tense bottom of the 9th that saw a Cougar runner thrown out at home
plate on a great throw from Tiger centre fielder Bryce Schwarz to keep the game
going. Both the Tigers and Cougars finished first in their round robin pools.
The Tigers then advanced to the final after a 3-0 win over Mission in the
semi-final. The Cougars defeated Burnaby 3-1 in the semis to advance.

July 2, 2007 - Wildcats Capture Silver at
Comox Invitational Tournament
The Wildcats started their exhibition season with a perfect 4-0 record
before losing in the Championship game 13-3 to their fellow Victoria Mustangs at
the Comox Pee Wee Invitational on the July 1 long weekend. The Wildcats
started strong by thumping Newton 17-4 and Oceanside 13-1 and then won a couple
of squeakers, 5-3 over Nanaimo and 7-5 over Comox in the semi-final game.
In the championship, the Mustang bats were on fire as they pounded out 14 hits
(including 3 home runs) off a weary Wildcat pitching staff.
July 15, 2007 - Wildcats Grab Championship at
Ladner Pee Wee AAA Mid-Season Challenge
The
2007 Victoria Wildcats captured the trophy in the 2007 Ladner Pee Wee AAA Mid
Season challenge over the July 14-15 weekend. After splitting their first two
games on Saturday - a 10-2 win over Coquitlam and a 9-4 loss to Cloverdale -
the Wildcats needed a win over Ladner on Sunday morning to propel them into the
final. Thanks to solid starting pitching from Brendan Miller and great relief
work from Jesse Hodges, the 'Cats emerged with a close 4-2 win (this game also
doubled as a league game so it was also a crucial win in the standings). This
put the Wildcats into the final, again against Ladner (also finishing round
robin at 2-1). The 'Cats came out flying and amassed a 13-4 lead over the first
4 innings before faltering and seeing Ladner close to within 2 at 13-11. The
Wildcats were not to be denied however and put 6 runs across the plate in the
top of the 6th and came away with a 19-13 marathon win to grab the title.
July 25, 2007 - Victoria
Wildcats Defeat Victoria Mustangs in League Finale: Both Advance to BC Minor Pee
Wee AAA Baseball Provincials
By virtue of their 9-3 win over the Victoria
Mustangs in their final league game July 25th at Carnarvon Park, the Victoria
Wildcats, winners of the Silver Medal at last year’s Pee Wee AAA National
Championships in Victoria, finished league play with a 5-2 record and assured
themselves of a spot in the 2007 Pee Wee AAA Provincial Baseball Championships
that will be held August 2-5 in Aldergrove. The Wildcats were led in the game by
the stellar play of Jesse Hodges, a member of last year’s Nationals team, who
pitched a complete game, registering 16 strikeouts, and who was 4 for 4 at the
plate, including a homerun, double and 5 RBIs. The Mustangs, with the
loss, also finished league play with an identical 5-2 record and will also
represent Victoria at the Provincial Championships. For both the Wildcats and
the Mustangs, it is the first time that Victoria’s Pee Wee AAA teams have
participated in the BC Minor Baseball Pee Wee AAA Summer League and the first
time that Victoria has been required to field 2 teams at the Pee Wee AAA level.
Both teams have fared well over the course of the season with the Wildcats (12-5
overall) capturing a silver medal at the Comox Invitational Tournament and a
gold medal at the Ladner Mid-Season Challenge Tournament. The Mustangs (15-2
overall), captured gold medals at both the Comox Invitational Tournament and the
Kelowna Valley of Champions Tournament.
August 5, 2007 - Wildcats
Finish 2-2 at Provincials with Two Tough Losses and Grab a Share of 5th Place
If the Victoria Wildcats could have found a
way to score 3 more runs in their first two games of this year's Pee Wee AAA
Provincial Championships, they could have easily been 4-0 in round robin play.
The Wildcats started out the tournament by playing Ridge Meadows to a 10 inning
thriller before losing 9-3. The Wildcats had numerous opportunities to
cash the winning run but just could not get a key hit before finally running out
of outs and giving up 6 runs in the top of the 10th. In Game 2, the
Wildcat bats were once again silent and they suffered a 2-1 loss to Aldergrove,
limiting the host team to just 3 hits. While still mathematically in the
running on Saturday morning, the Wildcats needed help from other teams to
advance right off the bat, but did not get it. Despite this, the Wildcats
responded on Saturday with a 4-1 win over Burnaby (complete game by Jesse
Hodges) and a 14-9 win over Kelowna to go out with 2 wins and a share of 5th
place overall. In addition, Wildcat player Jesse Hodges was selected by
eventual champion Abbotsford, to join their roster on Team BC at the Pee Wee
National Championships in Quebec City on August 16-20. Also, Ryan Kennedy was
selected to join the roster of host Ladner at the Pee Wee AAA Western Canadian
Championships in Ladner on August 23-26.
Pee Wee AAA Mustangs
Joining the Wildcats as our second Pee Wee AAA team this year are the Mustangs
who are managed by Tim Strocel and assisted by Danny Martin and Bruce Smith.
The Mustangs include Tom Strocel, Vinny Martin, Jesse Long, Ryan Rufh, Matt
Bryan, Nathan Donaldson, Kyle Livleton, Erik Phillips, Riley Edmonds, Thomas
Koop, Brandon Feldman and Nathan McKinlay.July 2, 2007 - Mustangs Capture Gold at Comox
Invitational Tournament
The Mustangs thumped their fellow Victoria Wildcats 13-3 to finish a perfect
5-0 and capture the title at the Comox Pee Wee Invitational on the July 1 long
weekend. The Mustangs were solid throughout the tournament and posted easy
wins over Abbotsford, Ladysmith and Comox in the round robin portion of the
tournament and then defeated Nanaimo in the semi-final. In the championship, the
Mustangs pounded out 14 hits including home runs by Matt Bryan, Ryan Rufh and
Jesse Long.
July 15, 2007 - Mustangs
Capture Gold at Valley of Champions Tournament in Kelowna
The Victoria Mustangs went a perfect 5-0
and captured the gold in the Pee Wee AAA division at the Valley of Champions
Tournament in Kelowna. The Mustangs finished round robin play at 4-0 and
then met Abbotsford in the final, where they emerged with a close 5-4 victory.
The championship victory was helped by the strong pitching of Eric Phillips
and Ryan Rufh and by a clutch 2-run triple by Rufh in the 4th inning. Brandon
Feldman also made a spectacular diving catch in the fifth inning to kill an
Abbotsford rally.
July 22, 2007 - Triple
Header Victory Assures Mustangs of Spot in Pee Wee AAA Provincials
The Victoria Mustangs swept all 3 games of
a Lower Mainland road-trip on the July 21-22 weekend to assure themselves a
spot at the 2007 Pee Wee AAA Provincials in Aldergrove. The Mustangs started
the weekend off Saturday morning with a tough and close 4-2 win over
Vancouver. This was followed up by a relatively easier 7-1 win over Ladner on
Saturday afternoon. On Sunday, the Mustangs played winless Newton and the
Canadians came out fighting and the Mustangs escaped with a 10-8 win. The
three victories assure the Mustangs of no worse than a 5-2 league record
(pending the outcome of their final league game against the Victoria
Wildcats), and qualifies them in the top 4 teams of the Pee Wee AAA Western
Division, thus earning a berth to Provincials.
August 5, 2007 - Mustangs
Struggle at Provincials But Enjoy the Experience - Send 3 Players to Nationals
and Westerns
The Victoria Mustangs struggled to find
their offence and came away with an 0-4 record at the 2007 Pee Wee AAA
Provincials in Aldergrove over the August long weekend. Playing in a tough
pool that included the eventual champion (Abbotsford) and the silver medalist
(Vancouver), the Mustangs began round robin play against Abby, and despite
keeping their power hitters in check, lost 4-0. The Mustangs then met up
with free swinging Richmond. Down 9-1 early, the Mustangs battled back to
within one at 9-8 before eventually succumbing 15-8. In game 3, the
Mustangs came up against the suddenly hot bats of Vancouver who hit often and
early and eventually took a 10-0 victory. In the final game the Mustangs
ended their season with an 11-4 loss to Cloverdale. On the positive side the
Mustangs were the winners of the team skills competition that was held on
Friday night. Players Ryan Rufh and Jesse Long were also selected by
eventual champion Abbotsford, to join their roster on Team BC at the Pee Wee
National Championships in Quebec City on August 16-20. Also, Matt Bryan was
