July 6, 2008 - Cougars
Take Silver Medal at Ridge Meadows Tournament
The Victoria Pee Wee "A" Cougars, based out of Peninsula Rotary Park,
reached the championship game of the Noel Reheaume Tournament held July 4-6 at
Maple Ridge. The Cougars were 2-1 in the round-robin portion of the eight-team
tournament after lopsided victories over the Rutland Rockies and the Cloverdale
Stallions and a rain-shortened 6-4 loss to the Ladner Red Sox. That record moved
the Cougars into a semifinal date with Gibsons -- a game that proved to be a
gem. Victoria rode the stellar seven-inning pitching of Andrew Funk and the
clutch home run of David Warren to a 2-1 victory over Gibsons in what most
observers said was the best game of the tournament. It was an all-Greater
Victoria affair in the championship game, with the Cougars meeting the Warriors,
a solid-hitting team based out of Triangle. The Warriors' hot bats propelled
them to a 19-13 victory in the all-Island shootout, forcing the Cougars to
settle for silver. The Cougars, managed by Lindsay Funk and assisted by Greg
Collins and Jeff Rud, include six players from Carnarvon and six from Peninsula.
Members of the team include Alex Hendra-Brown, Andrew Funk, Aron Funk, Dane
Collins, David Warren, James McNab, Jordan Parmar, Jorden Cooper, Julian Luis,
Matt Rud, Patrick Reed and Zane Takhar.
The team has come together nicely and is ramping up
for the Island Zone Tournament, with a 5-3-1 record overall in an exhibition
season that includes several games against AA teams. The Cougars are batting .415
as a squad and have scored 93 runs in nine games. On the basepaths, the Cougars
have stolen successfully in 108 of 109 attempts.

2007's Provincial Championship game and this year's Island Championship, they
then faced their rival Victoria Cougars in the semi-finals and needed a walk off
home run by Derek Littler in the bottom of the 8th inning to put them into the

August 17, 2008 - Bantam AAA Vipers are NATIONAL
CHAMPIONS!

British Columbia, represented by the Victoria Vipers, won the 2008 Bantam
National Championships in Mascouche, Quebec completing the tournament with a
perfect 7-0 record. On the first day of the tournament, BC defeated New
Brunswick 14-3, in a game they put away with an eight spot in the top of the 7th
. Friday saw BC open with a come from behind, walk-off 3-2 win over
Saskatchewan, followed up by an evening win over Alberta by a score of 7-2.
Saturday morning featured a game that will be remembered for a very long time in
Baseball Canada history. Team BC put up 29 runs in the bottom of the first
inning and crushed Newfoundland 36-1 in a game that we declared a mercy after
only three innings by Baseball Canada. That put BC out in front with a 4-0
record but had to win their final round robin game against the Host to secure a
quarter-final bye under the new National Championship format.
The game also had implications for other provinces as a BC win meant
Saskatchewan advanced while a loss meant New Brunswick advanced. BC scored all
four runs in the 6th inning and beat the host 4-0 and instead of playing a third
game on Saturday, BC sat back and watched the host then eliminate team Quebec to
set up a Saturday morning rematch against host
Lanaudière in the semi-final. This time it was
all BC from the start as they coasted to a 7-2 win. Ontario beat Saskatchewan in
the other semi final setting up a Championship game between two undefeated
teams. The Championship game was one of the best Bantam games witnessed in many
years. Quebec hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first to take a 1-0 lead
but BC responded in the middle innings taking a 4-1 lead on an error aided
inside the park homerun. Ontario battled back in the 6th cutting the lead to
one, but BC shut them down 1-2-3 in the 7th hanging on for a 4-3 win and a
National Championship. The host team took the bronze medal, while Quebec
finished a distant 6th in a tournament that saw fairly competitive scores in the
majority of games.
August 3, 2008 - Bantam AAA Vipers are
Provincial Champions!
After
capturing the 2008 Bantam AAA League title, the Bantam AAA Vipers continued
their success by grabbing the 2008 Provincial Championship. The Vipers won their
pool with a 3-1 record and then went on to play Richmond in the semi-finals
where they escaped with a close 6-5 victory. That put them into the finals
against their season rival Vancouver, and the Vipers dominated, coming away with
a 6-0 win and earning a trip to the Nationals in Quebec.

Host Provincials as Island Champs

second straight Island Championship and advancing to Provincials on the August

Nanaimo and Campbell River. The Wolves had two easy wins against Nanaimo and two
very hard fought games with Campbell River. The first game was a 2 - 0 shutout
pitched by Jeremy Roberts with some outstanding defensive plays. The second game
was a 4-3, 8 inning classic. Kyle Sandulescu pitched a fabulous complete 8
inning game. His only two bad pitches in the whole game resulted in two home
runs that gave Campbell River their three runs. Adam Hanson had a home run and
Jeremy Roberts drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 8th. The
Wolves are hosting the Midget AA Provincials Lambrick Park from July 31 to
August 03. Victoria's first home game is Thursday, July 31 at 6:30 pm on the
