August 9, 2009 - Vipers Play Well at 2009 Bantam AAA Provincials - Ousted in Controversial Semi-Finals
The 2009 Bantam AAA Provincial Championship opened up Thursday with the top seeds taking care of business. Top seed in Group A Vancouver defeated Richmond 9-3 and Burnaby 16-8 while the top seed in Group B Victoria defeated Ridge Meadows 14-1 and North Delta 11-2. Friday saw the beginning of the upsets as 10th seed Ridge Meadows defeated host Rutland 7-1 before Abbotsford knocked off Vancouver 9-6. Friday afternoon and evening also saw some greats games as Victoria defeated Cloverdale 3-2 in the only extra inning game of the weekend, before Burnaby outlasted Richmond 6-4, and Ridge Meadows fell one run short of a dramatic 7th inning comeback losing 12-11 to North Delta. The final game of the evening between Victoria and Rutland was suspended due to darkness with Victoria lead 7-5 after six innings. Saturday morning saw some very meaningful games. In Group A Abbotsford started with a win over Richmond in a must win game before Burnaby defeated Tri City 4-3 in what was also a must win game for Buranby. This created a three way tie at 3-1 between Abbotsford, Vancouver, and Burnaby and set up the first tiebreaker game in Bantam AAA history. With Abbotsford winning the tie they advanced to the semi-final and rivals Vancouver and Burnaby squared off in a tiebreaker that Burnaby won 5-2 to eliminate the top seed. In Group B, Cloverdale opended Sunday by playing spoiler and eliminating Ridge Meadows with a 3-2 win. That game was followed by the completion of Saturday's suspended game that saw Rutland score two 7th inning runs to tie the game before Victoria walked off with a 8-7 win in the bottom of the inning. The final round robin game of the day turned into a straight up winner's in losers out match between North Delta and Rutland. North Delta jumped out to an early 8-1 lead before Rutland charged back with nine runs in the 3rd and coasted to a 21-11 win. Sunday's semi-finals placed Rutland against Abbotsford and Burnaby against Victoria. On field three, Rutland jumped out to an early 6-1 lead and held off an Abbotsford comeback to win 12-6. On field four, Burnaby also jumped out to a 6-1 lead but Victoria clawed back to cut Burnaby's lead to 7-6 in the 7th. The 7th saw a long delay due to a Burnaby protest (the third and final protest filed over the weekend), which was partially upheld by BC Minor. When the game resumed Burnaby tacked on five runs and won 12-7 setting up the Rutland vs Burnaby final, which Burnaby won with a walk off home run.
