Victoria Vipers Win Bantam "AAA" Championship
|
The Victoria Bantam AAA Vipers won the Provincial Championships that
concluded in Surrey on August 1. It was a great team effort by the Vipers. The Vipers were seeded number 5 going into the Provincials; the baseball
pundits had the Vipers as definite longshots to capture the crown.
The Vipers finished their championship season in dramatic fashion. In the
semi-final tilt against the Tri-Cities Indians, the Vipers won with a walk-off
homer in the bottom of the ninth. In the finale versus the heavily favoured
Vancouver Dodgers, the Vipers scored four runs in the bottom of the 6th and won
8-7.
The 2004 edition of the Victoria Vipers was a team of keen and gritty players
who battled hard against teams that were seen to have more overall talent. With
the guidance and support of their coaches, the Vipers showed a lot of
determination & composure and came from behind on many occasions, including in
their biggest game of the season.
Congratulations to the Vipers players and coaches Ron Arcuri, Al Jung and
Bill Newburg for the great performance over the weekend. And thank you, Business
Manager Peter Durrant and other Viper parents for all your hard work and
leadership regarding off-field activities. Winning the Bantam AAA Provincial
Championship is a tremendous achievement and requires a true team effort over
the long season. Well done Vipers.
The Vipers players were Jamie Benn, Josh Campbell, Simon Cass, Andrew Crowe,
David Cull, Josh Curran, Miles Durrant, Jeff Erasmus, Adam Jung, Adam Sharpe,
Kevin Sopuck, Dan Welch and Perry Wilkinson.
The Vipers went on to represent British Columbia at the
Canadian Championships in Windsor Ontario where they placed fourth.
