Victoria Bears Capture Tier II "Western Division" Championship
The Victoria Bears jumped out to an 11-0 lead after the top of the first inning and then needed every one of those runs to hang on to a 12-10 victory over the scrappy Vancouver Braves to capture the Western Division title and the Bantam AAA Tier II Provincial Championship. Victoria hitters could do no wrong in the first inning as everything seemed to drop in for a hit and they burned their way through 2 Vancouver pitchers.  For Victoria, Alex Gibson got the start and was solid through the first 2 innings, allowing 0 runs on just 2 hits.  In the bottom of the 3rd, Vancouver batters started to find their way against Gibson, banging out 5 hits and scoring 3 runs before Gibson struck out 3 in a row to end the inning.  After a 3 up 3 down top of the 4th for Victoria, Vancouver again pounded away on Gibson, scoring 3 more runs, before reliever Dustin Robirtis came in to get the final 2 outs of the inning.  Victoria had the makings of another big rally in the top of the 5th as the first 3 batters reached on singles, however they could only push a single run across (on a suicide squeeze) before Vancouver shut the door.  The Braves kept eating away at the lead, scoring single runs in both the 5th and 6th innings to head into the final inning trailing 12-8.  After another 1-2-3 inning for the Bears, Vancouver again cued up the drama.  After a lead off walk, an error and a fielders choice, the Braves had runners at the corners and one out.  The next batter hit a sinking line drive to left field that looked like trouble, but was snagged on a great catch by the Bear's left fielder Nick Cuckovich for the second out.  Then perhaps the weirdest and what could have been the most unfortunate play of the tournament (for the Bears) ensued.  After the runner on first had stolen second, the next batter struck out and the Bears, assuming the game was over, began to celebrate.  However the ball had hit the ground for a dropped third strike and the batter began to run to first base and reached safely before any of the Victoria players could get to the bag for the force out. The runner on 3rd scored to make it 12-9.  The next batter singled to score another run making it 12-10 and brought the winning run to the plate.   With Victoria fans and players still wondering about the dropped third strike play, the next batter grounded out to second base and the real celebration could begin!  For Vancouver, their MVP award went to pitcher Jamie Klein who shut the Bears down over the last 6 innings, allowing the Braves to climb back in the game.  For Victoria, reliever Dustin Robirtis earned the MVP, as he pitched effectively over his 3 2/3 innings of work, earning the save. Coquitlam Moody Defeats Newton 5-2 to Win Tier I "National Division" Championship
The Coquitlam Moody Reds kept their perfect record in tact at the Provincials with a neat and tidy 5-2 win over the Newton Goldeyes.  The Reds jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and were never threatened as their solid pitching and defence kept the Newton hitters in check.  Nathan Kirby was the winning pitcher for the Reds and was named Game MVP.  For Newton, John Canby, who homered, was their MVP.  The Reds now advance to the Bantam AAA National Championships which will be held August 25-28 in Windsor, Ontario.
