Pee Wee "A" Cougars Enjoy Fine Season
The
Victoria Cougars PeeWee ‘A’ team had a lot of fun both in the Island Zone
and Provincial baseball games. The players brought many skills to the team
and although they came from different parks, playing on teams against each
other during the spring season, very quickly gelled together both on the
diamond and off.
The Island Zones was held in Ladysmith
over a 3 day period in July, taking place during some the hottest weather
this summer. The quick thinking parents of the team devised innovative
ways of keeping the team cool while in the dugout! We played four round
robin games, against teams from Duncan (19-1), Port Alberni (15-3),
Oceanside (23-5) and Ladysmith (0-13). This placed the Cougars in the
semi finals where they faced Oceanside, winning that game to play in the
finals against Ladysmith. The final game was very exciting as the score
was 3-2 going into the bottom of the 6th for Ladysmith.
Ladysmith then pulled ahead, scoring 6 runs to finish 9-2. Both Victoria
and Ladysmith headed off to the Provincial Tournament, held in Surrey.
The
PeeWee ‘A’ Provincials were
a four day event and will remain a memorable event for players, coaches and
parents! Our first game on the Thursday against Port Coquitlam-Moody was won
10-7. The team went on to play teams from Richmond and Kamloops, where they won
one and lost one, and advanced to the semi-finals.
The semi-final game on Sunday, August 1, was
played against a team from Tsawwassen. The Victoria Cougars gave it their best
but lost 7-1.
The team’s success would not be complete
without acknowledging the skill and dedication brought to the team by the
coaches! They were given a bunch of ball-players, most of whom they did not
know, and were given very little time to bring them together as a team that
represented Victoria well and made everyone proud.
