Marty Hall to Manage 2014 Victoria Selects

The Greater Victoria Baseball Association is pleased to announce the appointment of Marty Hall as the Manager of the 2014 Midget AAA Victoria Selects.

Hall grew up playing baseball in Victoria. He was a member of the Victoria Junior Team that won the National Championship in 1982.  After graduation from high school, he attended Cochise Junior College where he still holds numerous pitching records. He began playing professional ball in 1985 when he was drafted and signed as a pitcher by the Oakland Athletics. Two years later he was playing AA ball in the Houston Astros system.  In the late 1980’s, he played independent ball in Ontario and in 1993 moved back to Victoria, playing and coaching in the Mavericks league.  In the mid-90’s he spent three years in Australia as a player, coach and player development coordinator.  His ability to coach and develop young players also took him to Germany where he worked as a specialist instructor with young German ballplayers.  In 1993, Marty founded Pro-way Baseball-Softball which over the years has put on clinics teaching baseball fundamentals to thousands of Victoria ballplayers.

Marty also found time to further his coaching career in his home town.  In 2002, he coached the Victoria Mariners to a National Championship. In 2003, Coach Hall was named third base and defensive coach of a professional Canadian Baseball League team, the Victoria Capitals, under former Atlanta Braves shortstop, Manager Andreas Thomas.  Marty was appointed Manager of the Victoria Royals of the Pacific International League in 2004 and was a pitching instructor at the Lambrick Park Baseball Academy between 2005 and 2008. He also acted as a special instructor with the Big League Experience Camp in Oliver, B.C. between 2006 and 2009.  During this period, Marty continued to play, pitching with Team Canada in the Grand Forks International Tournament in 2007 and 2008. In 2009, he managed the Victoria Blacksox, an independent travel team.  More recently, he has coached tadpole and mosquito teams and served as a coordinator with the Victoria Eagles Baseball Club.

Marty has coached and worked with many players who have graduated to professional baseball, including Rich Harden, Vince Perkins, Steve Sinclair, Michael Saunders, Chris Mears, Henry Mabee, Jason Blackie, Shawn Loglisci, Graham Campbell, Dale Balance, Nic Cuckovich and Nick Pivetta.  He has instructed many Victoria players who have gone on to successful collegiate careers.

Coach Hall is tremendously excited about taking the helm of the Victoria Selects, “I’ve worked with many Selects players and I am always impressed with their talent, work ethic and love for the game.  My focus will be on skill development and getting my players ready for college ball if that’s their goal. And I plan on making sure we have lots of fun along the way. My goal is to help my players be successful on the diamond and in school.”

Martin Winstanley, head of the Victoria Eagles High Performance Baseball Program, is enthusiastic about his new Manager. “Marty Hall has incredible baseball experience that is a huge asset to the Selects. His entire baseball career is marked by professionalism and a passion for the game. We are very fortunate to have him as our 2014 Selects Manager, a fact recognized by the five members of our Manager Selection Committee who were unanimously in favour of Coach Hall’s selection.”
