A Day in the Life of a College Baseball Student Athlete
by Kobe Morris, Tyler Duncan, Jason Willow
Jason Willow, Tyler Duncan, and Kobe Morris are Victoria baseball players who are now competing at an elite level of college baseball in the United States. The three young men will be sharing their college experiences in the classroom and on the diamond and answering questions from younger players aspiring to follow their footsteps in college baseball. They will be addressing questions like:
– What’s your daily routine?
– How do you find a balance between your studies and your baseball?
– How do school grades impact playing time?
– How much scholarship money is available?
– The pros and cons of Junior College vs. 4-Year Schools?
– How important are my high school grades and SAT results?
This informative session will be your opportunity to listen to their stories and baseball journeys and ask the questions you have on what it takes to succeed as a college student athlete.
When: December 18 at 7:00 pm
Where: Gordon Head Rec Centre
This event is free and open to all Victoria baseball players and their parents.
The Greater Victoria Baseball Association (GVBA) will be having open tryouts for the 2019 18U AAA team and all players from ages 15 to 18 (birth years 2001, 2002 and 2003) are encouraged to attend. The tryouts will be held in an indoor sports facility in early January, 2019. Times and location will be announced as soon as the number of players registering for the tryouts is known.
It is important that players in Victoria wishing to play 18U AAA baseball in 2019 register by clicking [this Google Forms Link].
BC (Minor) Baseball 18 U AAA is a competitive wood bat league with a 44-game schedule beginning in early April and ending in late July. Tryouts will be in January and the selected players will practice indoors until the season starts in April.
The 18U AAA schedule involves significant travel to play up-Island, the Lower Mainland, and the Interior teams. With the travel expected for this team families must be fully aware of the financial commitment that is required. Players would be expect to travel over to the mainland and to the interior and in some cases would be required to stay overnight if they have games both on the Saturday and the Sunday. In the past the cost to participate has been around $3000 for the season. This amount though may be less of more depending on the schedule for the team. Players and families must be fully aware of the commitment required for a full season team.
