Victoria Rebels Capture 2004 Mosquito "A" Provincial Championship
Rutland, B.C. In a game that Cora Schillings of BC Minor Baseball called the "best Championship game she has ever seen", the Victoria Rebels Mosquito A Baseball team defeated the Abbotsford Angels 6-5 in extra innings to capture the gold medal in the B.C. Minor Baseball Provincial Championships held on the B.C. Day long weekend in Rutland, British Columbia. Trailing 4-0 after one inning, the Rebels chipped back to trail 5-3 after the third and then scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game. A scoreless sixth forced the game into extra innings and after Abbotsford was held hitless in the top of the seventh, Victoria put together three straight base hits to score the winning run in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the inning (Details).
The Rebels dominated the tournament with a perfect 6-0 record, with round-robin victories against South Richmond (7-5), Rutland (12-2), Burnaby (4-2) and Cloverdale (12-2). A semi-final win over Ridge Meadows (9-6) put the Rebels in the finals against Abbotsford who had also gone 4-0 in their division and who had defeated South Richmond in the semi-finals. Victorias wins over both South Richmond in round-robin play and Abbotsford in the Championship, handed those teams their first losses of the season.
The Rebels are comprised of 9-year old players from the Gordon Head and Allenby Park Minor Baseball Associations in Victoria. Players include Daniel Bednarski, Matthew Bryan, Matthew Cave, Jake Duvall, Dean Elborne, Josh Heard, Jesse Hodges, Morgan Miles, Brendan Miller, Bryce Schwarz, Mitchell Seivewright and Nick Woodcock. The Manager was Chris Stewart and Assistant Coaches were Steve Hodges and Clark Seivewright.
Victoria finished the season with an 18-4 record overall. In addition to their Provincial Championship, the Rebels captured the silver medal at the North Delta Cutting Edge Tournament earlier in July. This was the first Provincial Championship for a Victoria Mosquito age team (9-10 year olds) since joining the B.C. Minor Baseball Program three years ago.
